TitaniumSea leads the technology behind NBCOlympics.com for the Sydney Olympics.
Quokka Sports and NBC partnered to produce NBCOlympics.com for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. TitaniumSea led the technology behind the website for Quokka, including managing hosting, building publishing tools, building tools to capture and manage image and video assets, and developing some of the partner advertising sub-sites and contests.
One big problem was to get the tens of thousands of high resolution image assets from Sydney to San Francisco in near real-time. With 200ms packet transmission latency, the effective bandwidth was very small, even over the dedicated dual T3s. TitaniumSea devised a UDP transmission system that increased transfer speed by 30x over regular file sharing.
Another challenge was to provide the producers with a tool to manage all of these image assets. TitaniumSea built a cataloging tool that automatically tagged images with xml data that contained sport, athletes, date/time, quality and other information. Producers and designers could quickly scroll through thumbnails of images and then drill down for the high resolution master images.
By the end of the 21 days of games, the Sydney website for NBCOlympics.com totaled 100k html pages, 60k images, and 500 video clips.
